Omo Omoruyi’s Children Contest Will In Court

Barely two months after the remains of erudite Professor of Political Science and former Director-General of defunct Centre for Democratic Studies, CDS, Prof. Omo Omoruyi, was committed to mother earth, his will has become a subject of litigation, as two of his children have gone to a state High Court sitting in Benin, to contest its contents.
The two children, who are claimants in the suit are Mrs. Amenze Omoruyi- Okungbowa and Mrs. Ivie Omoruyi- Idehen, while the defendants include Prof. Union Edebiri, Mr. Donald Omorodion (Executors of the will of late Prof. Omonhionmwan Omoruyi) and Dr. Imuetiyan Festus.
Others are Mr. Iduoze Nehikhare, Owere Dickson Imansogie, Mr. Sunday Omoruyi, Mr. Eghosa Omoruyi, Mr. Courage Omoruyi and the Probate Registrar.
The claimants, through their counsel, Mr. N. Osifo, want the court to declare that the Will of late Prof. Omoruyi be declared null and void, same being contrary to Bini Native Law and Customs.
They want, in the alternative, a declaration that the 3rd and 4th defendants being witness to the said Will, cannot under the Will’s Act be beneficiaries under same.
They want the court to declare that the concepts of adopted male children are unknown to Bini Native Laws and Customs and therefore, not entitled to inherit properties from their adopted father.
The claimants are praying the court for “A declaration that the signature purported to be signature of the claimants’ father on the Will dated  September 28, 2013, is not his signature.
“A declaration that a Will that was lodged with the Probate Section of the High Court after the death of the Testator is not the Will of the Testator.
“A declaration that the Will dated September 28, 2013 which was lodged in November 2013, is open to serious doubt as to its correctness and actual custody particularly when the Testator had died before it was lodged.” [Vanguard]

The Nigerian New National ID Card Will Come With MasterCard Chip And PIN

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) representative described the advantages of the new national identity card. Apart from many other things, it may also be used as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card anywhere in the world where there is MasterCard logo.

Briefing journalists today in Abuja, NIMC’s Director of Technical Services, Mr Emmanuel Ogungbe disclosed the Commission have already signed an agreement with MasterCard.
He explained that, besides being just an ID card, it is also a cash card, so the holder can withdraw money in any place. Moreover, especially within the West African sub-region, it soon would become possible to travel with this card only, passport-free.

Mr. Ogungbe called the card “a general-multi-purpose card”. All the holder needs to do, he maintained, is to present it at the point of entry of any country. After the information is checked, the entry would be allowed.

Mr. Ogungbe stressed the new card is “error-proof,” and thus, secure.

“We have a system called automated biometrics identification system in our data centre that checks information of newly registered people coming into the database against what we already have in the database,” he said. “If there is a hit, that means that person was registered before, and, of course, this means we will deny new registration.

“So, there is no way of beating that system for now; I’m very confident of that. That will ensure that you can only register once.”

The card is supposed to assist in tracking criminals as well.

“What the bad elements do is to hide in a way that you won’t be able to capture them. But we are saying with this [ID card] we know who they are and we will be able to very easily locate them.” Mr. Ogungbe said. If any fingerprints are lifted at the crime scene, it is enough to send them to NIMC – and they will disclose full details on the culprits.

“Talk about even fraud in the banks, where someone will obtain a loan in a particular bank, move on to the next bank without servicing the previous loan to obtain another loan; that will become a thing of the past,” Mr. Ogungbe added.

“Because once the bank takes your national identification number, it can see all your various transactions, all various businesses that you have with all the other banks.”

He said that government had asked the commission to ‘register every single Nigerian and legal residents’ but warned the aliens against any attempt to use the card to commit crimes.

“If you are an alien and you think you can continue doing that and go scot-free, then the person’s time is numbered because very soon, we will get to him or her,” he assured.

Spanish Police Nab 3 Nigerians For Forcing Mothers Into Prostitution

Spanish police on Thursday arrested three Nigerians who forced African women into prostitution in Europe, including by holding two women’s children captive for at least four months. Five women in different Spanish cities were freed from the clutches of the gang after a long operation that began at the beginning of the year, on the basis of information from a young African prostitute, a police statement said.

In August, police rescued two little children, one of them aged three, from an address in Valmojado, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Madrid. They were found in poor health and malnourished. “They were kept locked in separate rooms… at times gagged and tied to the bed” by captors who fed them tranquilisers to keep them docile, the statement said.

“The children were to guarantee that the women paid off their ‘debts’ by going into prostitution and to stop them running away.” The mothers were eventually found in France, where they were forced to work as prostitutes. The criminal gang holding them used that and other strategies to bring Nigerian women to Spain and force them to work as prostitutes, the police said.

The women were “enticed with fraudulent promises, with false job offers or by abusing their precarious situation”. They were smuggled to Spain by boat from Morocco. Once in Spain, they were sold to pimps in EU countries, the statement said.

The Entitlement Mentality

During the ‘Occupy Nigeria’ campaign, I saw a placard which I found initially interesting, but which I disagree with now. It was a placard that threatened, “One day, the Poor will have nothing left to eat but the Rich!”

At the time I thought the rich being referred to were the corrupt politicians who have looted and continue to loot the legacy of Nigerians, alive and unborn. But as I thought about it in more detail, I realized the placard didn’t specify which rich people they meant. It appeared all rich people were easy pickings, it didn’t matter whether they got their wealth through hardwork or through deceit. Somehow the message was: if you are rich, you are or will soon become a target for the poor to attack.

In recent times, I have been reading stories which seem to confirm how much some people who consider themselves poor, will happily attack others who appear ‘better’ than them. The rising number of kidnapping cases in the country is an example. When caught, these criminals, who are often university graduates, blame the government and the society for their crime. They don’t blame it on their greed and laziness, instead they choose to direct their unjustified anger at a helpless society.

I blame this on an entitlement mentality that many people have about life. It is not only seen in the young graduate who believes he deserves to get a job just because he has a certificate, it is also seen in the relatives who think just because they are family members they deserve to be supported by their more successful relatives.

While we agree that it is a noble thing for those who are rich to help those who are not, we must remember that it is their prerogative to do so or not. They should not be threatened, attacked or seen as targets of crime when for reasons known to them, they choose not to help as expected.

I don’t write this because I am rich or because I don’t know what it means to be poor. Far from it! I come from a very, very humble background. Infact we were so poor that at the age of five, I knew we were poor! And I don’t think I have ‘arrived’ yet, my bank account reminds me of that daily.

However, I have refused to tie my destiny to the whims and caprices of a rich relative somewhere or the government. I know that with hardwork and determination I too can become comfortable enough to take care of myself and others. I know many people though who still feel that others ‘owe’ them something, just because they are more successful. And I have learnt some lessons from their sad and unproductive lives:

People with entitlement mentality are usually ungrateful; because these people feel entitled to whatever support they are receiving, they never really appreciate the sacrifices made for them. They often waste the resources spent on them and in the case of a loan, may refuse to pay back. Their reason? They believe they deserved it, so you didn’t do them any favours.

They are lazy and proud: These people do not believe in days of ‘humble beginnings.’ They are usually dreamers and want to make it rich quick. Don’t dare suggest to them any humble job or trade as a starting point, they will be quick to tell you that it is beneath them! And for those who claim to be religious, they might quip, “my God is a rich God”, happily forgetting that that same God allowed His own son to be born in a manger and work as a carpenter.

They are greedy and may become criminals: Because these people have ‘big eyes and long throat’ like we say in Nigeria, and are too lazy and proud, they are likely to engage in criminal activities. And yes some might get away with crime, but there is always a day of reckoning. And when that day comes, they of course blame everyone else, even the devil, for their behaviour.

They never take responsibility for their behaviour: These people are very quick to play the blame-game. Their excuses are “if only my parents were rich”, “if only my uncle wasn’t so stingy”,  “if only the government did this or that”, etc. They quickly forget motivational stories of people who triumphed against all odds to become successful. They would rather live in self-pity, nursing and polishing their excuses as their trophies.

The other day I read a tragic story that showed how destructive an entitlement mentality can be. It was the story of a landslide in a town in one of the southern states of the country. According to the news, government officials had warned residents of that area to relocate a number of times, but they refused. The obvious reason for their refusal was because the government had not made alternative accommodation available. Sadly when the landslide occurred, it killed men, women and children. The survivors ran away from the area with little or nothing. They didn’t wait any longer for the government to provide accommodation, they ran away to live with relatives or friends.

Of course we can blame the government for not helping more, but I think if those people had left when they were warned, instead of waiting for government assistance, they would be alive today. I hate to sound unfeeling, but their excuses, though justifiable, did not save them or their loved ones from tragedy. The government did not suffer, but they did.

And that is the unpleasant truth about life: excuses or blame games do not spare us from unnecessary suffering. We owe it to ourselves to make or mar our lives. Our parents, relatives, government or society can only help us so far.

If you don’t make the effort, you alone and your loved ones will suffer the consequences, not the people you are blaming. If you will get rid of that entitlement mentality, and try your best at whatever you do, you too will be successful.

Torso found in Thames ‘identified’

A ten-year-old mystery of a boy’s headless corpse found floating in the Thames may finally have been solved. It is believed the body is that of six-year-old Igpo Mwosa, a Nigerian who was killed by a gang during a ritual.

Post-mortem tests showed he was fed a potion containing gold, clay and bone and his torso, wearing just a pair of orange shorts, was found floating in the Thames near Tower Bridge in 2001.
ITV News reporters followed the trail to Nigeria and a woman called Joyce Osagiede, who had been looking after the boy.
She said he was used ‘for a ritual in the water’ and admitted handing him over to a man named Bawa.
She denied being involved in his death, saying: ‘I’m a mother. I have children. I can’t kill somebody’s child.’
Now detectives are to fly to Nigeria in renewed attempts to find the killer.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: ‘We can confirm that the investigation team have been preparing to visit Lagos, Nigeria, in connection with the Adam inquiry.
‘They will be travelling in the near future.’

Nigerian man killed by a lorry after storming out of car during row with his wife

A Nigerian man was killed on a motorway after getting out of a car on the way to the airport after a fight with his wife over their credit card.

Daily Mail reports 

Nahinmu Nicholas had stormed out of the Ford Focus with his suitcases, saying he was going to hitch-hike to Heathrow, but was knocked down by a lorry in the morning darkness.

His wife had pulled over on what they both thought was the hard shoulder of the M25, not realising that it was a live lane because of roadworks. A coroner was told that lorry driver Martin Hook was unable to avoid Mr Nicholas as he suddenly caught sight of him.

His 13-tonne bread lorry also struck the couple’s car in the accident just six minutes after they had stopped on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 at junction 6 for Godstone,  Surrey, at around 4.30am on April 10.

Florence Olokun-Ola told the inquest in Woking, Surrey, that her husband was going to Nigeria alone for 12 days and that the fight started because she wanted their bank card while he was away. ‘The argument became very aggressive and his voice changed,’ she added.

Mrs Olokun-Ola, who had earlier told how financial problems had caused tension in their relationship, said she no longer felt comfortable driving and pulled over to what she thought was the hard shoulder.
She added: ‘He took off his seat belt. As soon as the car stopped he took the keys and opened the boot and took out his luggage. He put it by the crash barrier.’
In an attempt to get her husband back in the car Mrs Olokun-Ola drove forward a bit, but he started to walk back down the carriageway  trying to thumb a lift.

Then she felt the force of the  collision as the lorry struck the rear of her car.
‘I got out the car and at first I was angry because he didn’t come  running over to see if I was okay,’ she said. She then discovered her  husband’s body and ran back to the car to dial 999.
Mr Hook said he was travelling through the roadworks at 50mph. ‘The next thing I knew was there was a dark shadow in front of me,’ he added. ‘I turned straight away to the centre of the carriageway.’
A post-mortem examination  concluded that Mr Nicholas died as a result of severe head injuries.

Accident reconstruction officer PC Dominic Gibson said that the stretch of the M25 where the accident  happened was unlit. He said there were signs warning that the hard shoulder was now a live lane.

Assistant Surrey Coroner Michael Burgess recorded a verdict that Mr Nicholas, of Dartford, Kent, died as a result of a road traffic collision.

Former Ghanaian international footballer Nii Odartey Lamptey has revealed that he recently found out that all three children he had with his wife of almost 20 years are not his biological children. He made the shocking revelation in a radio interviewed when asked why he was divorcing his wife.

“...I thought they were my children but upon a DNA test, I got to know that they are not my biological children. The issue is in court so I’m pleading, because it is a legal issue I don’t want to go through so many things, but I am 100% sure that the children are not mine after 20-years of marriage. We had five children but two passed away so we were left with only 3 and they are not mine" The former Aston Villa player told reporters

Meanwhile, his estranged wife Gloria Lamptey (pictured above) is claiming that it was Lamptey who suggested they use artificial insemination after realizing he was infertile. A claim Lamptey denies. A close friend of the former Anderlecht footballer said he'd on several occasions caught his wife cheating on him but stayed with her because of his love for her and the businesses they own together.

New PDP-APC Merger: Tambuwal’s Position As Speaker Remains Intact – Reps

SPEAKER, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AMINU TAMBUWAL, GOING FOR PLENARY AS THE HOUSE RESUMED IN ABUJA

The House of Representatives said on Thursday that Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal remained its Speaker in spite of the recent development in the polity.

The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Victor Ogene, said this while addressing parliamentary correspondents in Abuja.
Ogene (APGA-Anambra) said that unless the All Progressives Congress (APC) garnered up to 181 members, there would be no basis to discuss any change in the leadership of the House.
He also cited Section 68 (1) of the 1999 Constitution which stipulates the conditions under which members can defect to another political party, adding that there is nothing like group or mass defection.
His words: “In politics, things like this happen, but as a House we remain one. Section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, says people cannot cross-carpet in a group except in a merger situation. But defection has to do with individual members, so if they’re defecting, the proper thing must be done by activating that section of the constitution.
“As at now, we’re not aware of any member defecting to another party. Remember, going by our rule, until a party has 181 members, you can’t talk of having the majority.”
Information Nigeria reports that before the defection of five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the APC, the PDP had 208 representatives in the House, while APC had 137 members.

The capital city of Cross River State, Calabar, will be in the centre of attention on November 30, 2013, Saturday, when several Nollywood stars led by Rita Dominic and Kate Henshaw light the Africa’s tallest Xmas tree.

Other stars confirmed to grace the event are Gideon Okeke and Ihuoma Nwigwe. Top comedian, Akpororo is also billed to crack the ribs of guests.
The event will also mark the start of the annual one month-long Calabar Festival. The event has become a world class event, which attracts guests for all over Nigeria and the whole world.
The Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is definitely going to be an epic event, which will be held at the Millennium Park in Calabar. The Festival will be witnessed and declared open by Governor Liyel Imoke at the Calabar Municipality Council grounds.
The tree-lighting ceremony will be followed by the Paradise City Walk against HIV/AIDS the next day, while the likes of Samsong, Obiwon, Segun Obe, Kage, Nnanke and Darlene, who will be performing at the Millennium Park by 7 p.m., are billed for the post-walk event tagged ‘World Aids Day Charity Concert’.
The Festival Village, according to a source in the Government House, is being moved from its traditional ground at the Cultural Centre, owing to the on-going construction work on the new shopping complex there.
The tourist city is already wearing new looks, in anticipation of festive events.

Policeman Faces Court for Shooting a Boy in Lagos

A 39-year-old policeman, Rasak Alowonle, has appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on a charge of manslaughter on November 28, 2013, Thursday.

The policeman is facing a count charge for allegedly shooting and killing a nine-year-old boy while dispersing a mob at Mile 12, Ketu, Lagos, on June 13, 2013.
Inspector Richard Odigie, the Prosecutor, revealed that the mob attempted to stop the accused from seizing a commercial bus.
The Prosecutor said the accused and other members of his patrol team wanted to seize the bus from a driver who was obstructing traffic. However, the bus driver resisted.
The commotion drew the attention of a crowd that attacked the team with stones and broken bottles.
Alowonle shot a gun in an attempt to disperse the mob, and the bullet hit the boy.
“The victim’s parents and sister went to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, to pick up their eldest son, who arrived from Canada.
“The bullet went through the wind screen and hit the deceased, who was seated at the back seat, in his right eye.
“The deceased died on the spot but was rushed to a nearby hospital,” the Prosecutor revealed.
He said that Alowonle, who was arrested by his colleagues, had been in police custody for the past four months. The accused pleaded not guilty.
Mrs. A. A. Demi-Ajayi, the Chief Magistrate, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case has been adjourned to January 15, 2014, for mention.
